Experience how Tai Expeditions empowered women and youth in Kanyanda, Uganda, through impactful community-based tourism initiatives—such as crafts, tailoring, and homestays.

The Beginning

In early 2024, Tai Expeditions partnered with the Kanyanda Community Experience to transform lives through community-based tourism. This aligns with Alpha’s policy of supporting local economies, promoting fair employment practices, and preserving cultural heritage.

Tai Expeditions provided seed capital to start a craft-making initiative for local women, many of whom had limited economic opportunities. With Alpha’s support, they began making handmade baskets, jewelry, and beadwork. Alpha helps market these crafts online, connecting artisans to international travelers and buyers. This fulfills its pledge to amplify local voices and promote cultural experiences while minimizing tourism leakages.

Skills for the Future

Alpha’s policy focuses on youth empowerment through skills and decent work. In Kanyanda, this led to the establishment of a tailoring program. Alpha provided machines, materials, and mentorship. Dozens of young people learned the skills of tailoring and garment design. Many now earn a living by making school uniforms and clothing. This shows Alpha’s commitment to job creation and livelihoods in eco-tourism.

Achievements So Far

By the end of 2024, the collaboration had shown results aligned with Alpha’s objectives and the value of local community tours, with thirty women producing and selling crafts.

  • By December 2024, participating families saw a 50% increase in household income.
  • By late 2024, 20 youths had completed tailoring training, with several establishing micro-businesses.
  • A new online sales channel was launched in December 2024 to connect local producers to global markets.
  • Community pride has grown. Women and youth now play key roles in household and village development.
  • Ewaaka Homestay started in February 15th, 2025

These achievements show Alpha’s policy in action. Women are empowered, jobs are created for youth, and local communities benefit from village experiences in Uganda.

A Shared Future

For Tai Expeditions, the Kanyanda partnership is more than corporate responsibility. It shows our sustainability commitments in action. By investing in communities, we create lasting social and economic value and strengthen Uganda’s cultural fabric.

This initiative supports Alpha’s goals: backing at least three community development projects annually.

  • Creating new local job opportunities by 2026.
  • We ensure that at least 10% of tour-related spending supports local businesses and homestay tourism in Uganda.

One community leader proudly stated:
“Because of Alpha’s support, our women can now stand on their own, and our youth see a brighter future. Tourism has become our bridge to opportunity.”
